Where is Black Chasm Cavern?

driving distanceLOCATION

Black Chasm Cavern is set just outside the town of Volcano, which was established in 1849. Miners cleaned out $90 million in gold from the rocks by sluicing and hydraulic mining before everyone gave up and walked away from the town's 17 hotels, 35 saloons, 3 breweries and 2 temperance societies.

Just two of the original hotels remain today in Volcano. The St. George Hotel and the Volcano Union Inn have both been renovated, but still maintain their rustic charm from the gold rush.

Five minutes away is Chaw Se Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park. Its museum features a variety of exhibits and an outstanding collection of Sierra Nevada Indian artifacts. A Miwok village complete with a ceremonial roundhouse has been reconstructed in the middle of the small valley.

At 2,400 feet above sea level, Black Chasm Cavern is located in an environmental transition zone where majestic madrones rub shoulders with high country pines. Just an hour's drive from Kirkwood Ski Resort and 15 minutes from the Eldorado National Forest, this is a very scenic area.

Our physical address is: 15701 Pioneer Volcano Road, Volcano, CA 95689, USA
